In this excerpt from "Cruddy" by Lynda Barry, she expresses a poetic vulgarity in her wording which can be seen by phrases like "Once upon a cruddy time on a cruddy street on the side of a cruddy hill." The author seems to tell of the girls' discontent with her life by her description of everything around her as cruddy. Her referring to everything as cruddy helps to communicate the pent up rage of a grounded young girl taking her anger out through writing.
